I went to see a Wrock show last night. The lineup was Witherwings, Snidget, Lauren Fairweather (Maggiacomo), and the Whomping Willows. Originally, Justin Finch Fletchley was supposed to play, but he skipped out on this show for some unspecified reason.
I’ve done library and music venue Wrock shows before, but this one was held in a youth center/house in Springfield. There were maybe 20 people there total, and it was definitely very different than the other Wrock shows I’ve been to. Witherwings played first, and spilt her set between a few songs with a backing track full band style and a few songs with her accompanying herself on piano. I think both work equally well for her, but have different appeals. There was definitely a high level of audience participation and interaction throughout the show, which was a nice benefit of the small space. Snidget was next, and ended up sitting on the floor to play her Dulcimer, so that was a pretty unique view and interaction as well. She had the whole crowd sing along to the bridge on the “sad Colin Creevey song” that I should probably figure out the name of, and it ended up sounding really pretty, since people were singing and not yelling along like they might at a larger show (not that that doesn’t have it’s merits as well). She also did an Capella song with Lauren, which was a really pretty lullaby. Lauren sang most (if not all) of her Prince’s Tale EP for her set, which was sad but really good as well. Matt got a little louder and had some standing up and dancing going on throughout the set, but the show overall still kept a pretty chill feel. It was also nice to hear a couple of Matt’s non-Wrock songs from his upcoming CD, because I was interested in how that was going to go.
While the show wasn’t screaming and jumping and all that normally goes with Wrock shows, I really liked it for what it was. It was one tiny room with all of us together, no actual stage, and seats stuck where they fit. The show definitely had more of a personal community feel, rather than the group identity of bigger shows. I also got some great pictures, so those will probably go up later.
